Therapy through Art

I came across this super cool photo and had to click on it! How they are developed is very interesting, but their back story is even more so. I watched the video about the artist – a wonderful story about hope – however, it made me think (again) about the subject of art cuts in school. http://blog.flickr.net/en/2013/02/01/a-trick-of-the-light/ It’s interesting to imagine not only the creative energy these classes spark but also their therapeutic possibilities.
Funding for art classes and other seemingly extra-curricular classes has been cut in thousands of schools throughout the country over the past decade. We all know these classes encourage constructive outlets for all students, but, perhaps, they have an even loftier role for students with mental illness and behavior challenges. As the topic of the lack of resources available to these kids is currently being hotly debated, we should all consider the benefits of re-funding these types of subject areas.
